Black Sage is native to California, from the Bay Area south to Baja Sur. The flowers range from a soft white to a light blue, blooming primarily in the spring. It is terrific plant for a drought tolerant garden, so long as during the year the garden gets 15 inches of rain. It tolerates many types of garden soil, from sandy to rocky to even moderately heavy clay. It produces a small seed which is great forage for quail. The leaves are intensely pungent scented and somewhat sticky - you either love the smell or hate it!

Prune it back moderately (30-40 % of height) in the fall to lengthen the lifespan of this plant.
