A shrubby perennial to 8 feet tall, native to the central mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico. It will withstand temperatures as low as 20 degrees F. Flowering occurs in the winter, and is a brilliant large orange red drooping bloom the is attractive to hummingbirds. Plant near a wall or fence to give extra protection from frost and wind.
Grow with ornamental grasses such as Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum' or Miscanthus sinensis.
