Hyssop used to be a widely used medicinal herb, believed to be a cure all for almost everything. It is not used much anymore, but makes a wonderful short growing semi-evergreen hedge in the garden. It is native to the Balkans and Turkey, where it grows wild on the hot dry hillsides. It has small dark green leaves and deep blue flowers on small rounded sub-shrubs ti 2 feet tall. It prefers hot dry locations with good drainage. It responds well to clipping, so it is often used as a hedge or part of an herbal knot garden. It has a bit of a strong, peppery flavor, although is not used much as a culinary plant. It is often included in tea blends, particularly for respiratory illnesses.
