This herbaceous perennial is a spectacular garden ornamental whose red roots are considered medicinal. An abundance of branched spikes of large blue flowers rise above the two foot by two foot clump of deeply-lobed green basal leaves from late spring through part of summer. Plant prefers regular watering and can handle sun to part shade. Native to open forests and grassy slopes from 300 feet to 4000 feet of elevation in both China and Japan.
