Hypericum perforatum grows like a groundcover except when it flowers in June. Historically, it has been a powerful plant, full of 'magic', believed to ward of evil spirits. Bright yellow flowers are prized for their medicinal uses - external uses include massage oil, internal uses include to alleviate mild depression and insomnia. There are many other species of Hypericum that are used for attractive groundcover - H. perforatum is not that attractive and can easily become a weed, so it is typically grown only by those who want to harvest the flowers.  In many areas of the country this plant is banned because it grows so aggressively and contains hypericin, which is phyto-toxic to livestock.

This plant can be grown successfully in a container, or in a semi shady area of the garden. It prefers average garden water.
