It is a large growing subtropical tree which does best in a higher humidity environment with regular watering, it does not like to dry out. In hot, dry climates Yerba Mate may be best as an indoor plant with sun. Prune to control growth for height or width. As part of the holly family, it has white flowers followed by red berries.
